Employee-directed giving
Every employee at Maine Beer Company is welcome and encouraged to nominate a nonprofit that is meaningful to them.
Each month a rotating panel of employee volunteers reads, researches, discusses, and, votes on submissions from the previous month.
After voting is complete, we send a donation to the selected nonprofit.
December's Selection: Urban Roots Minnesota
Save the Great South Bay
"It’s our bay, our heritage — and our legacy. We grew up clamming it, sailing it, swimming in it. Now our bay is sick, and we must heal it, for today and for the future!
Save The Great South Bay is a local 501(c)3 non-profit that advocates for and implements real solutions that will help restore the bay, and with that, strengthen our South Shore communities."
Nominated by Mike P.
"I am a born-and-raised Long Islander who grew up on the Great South Bay.
When I was young, my family had a small-brown boat called "The Columbus Clan" -- named after
the street we grew up on. My father, sisters and I would spend days out on the Great South Bay
clamming. I still recall the first time I sunk my feet into wet sand and kicking up my first clam. My
hand quickly darting into the water to catch it... "I got one, dad!"
As a teenager, my friends and I would drive down to throw the crab traps down at Santapogue
Point. I was always fond of the ol' chicken leg and fishing wire trick. It never worked though.
One summer during college, I worked at a deli on Fire Island -- a barrier island in the Great South
Bay. My friends would boat over on occasion to visit me and I would make them sandwiches the
size of their heads. Probably not kosher with the boss, but he didn't like me very much anyway.
A few years back my wife and I rented a house on the beach in Fire Island. That's where we got
married. Now we go back every year with our daughter June.
The Great South Bay has a very special place in my heart."
