Full-Time Lab Technician

Department: Production

Maine Beer Company is dedicated to producing the best beer possible, and we are looking for someone to join our team in the laboratory! First and foremost, the candidate must have a positive attitude and work well with others as part of a brewery team. This person would conduct daily lab procedures, testing and routine QA/QC under the supervision of the Director of Quality. Position is full time and based in Freeport, Maine. Salary is dependent on experience. Full-time employees receive a generous benefits package including fully-paid health insurance, at least 3 weeks paid vacation, 401k and profit sharing, dental insurance, disability insurance, and of course free beer! Duties and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Daily aseptic microbiological sampling and analysis
  • Preparation of inoculation media using an autoclave for microbiological plating and monitoring
  • Membrane filtration of brewing water, packaged product, etc.
  • Yeast management and maintenance including measurement of cell counts, viability, vitality, washing, etc.
  • Running daily qPCR analysis of yeast, fermenting samples and packaged product
  • Using a Cellometer to perform yeast cell counts and viability checks on packaged product as well as routine fermenting beer counts
  • Daily forced fermentations
  • Tracking CO2, ABV, and gravities of the packaged beer library
  • Using an Anton Paar Density Meter / Alcolyzer for gravity and alcohol determinations
  • Using a UV/Vis spectrophotometer to perform IBU and color testing on packaged product as well as other applications (VDK)
  • Routine calibration of laboratory and brewing instruments
  • Record keeping and data logging
  • Maintaining a neat and tidy laboratory and keeping a professional work environment
  • Effectively communicate with the Sensory Manager and Director of Quality

Qualifications:

  • Positive attitude and ability to work well with a team
  • A bachelor’s degree in biology, food science, chemistry or related field strongly preferred
  • 1+ year experience in a production laboratory (brewing lab, an asset)
  • Familiarity with brewing microbiology and brewing process
  • Ability to follow established SOPs and work safely within a laboratory environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and communication
  • Great attention to detail

Full-Time Packaging Technician

Maine Beer Company is dedicated to producing the best beer possible. We are looking for a self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic to join our Packaging Team within the Production Department to conduct daily packaging operations (bottling and kegging beer). First and foremost, the candidate must have a positive attitude and work well with others as a member of a small company. Position is full time, typically 40+ hours per week, and based in Freeport, Maine. Duties and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Work collaboratively with the Technical Director and the Packaging Manager to ensure that high quality standards are met in all packaging operations
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment and follow safe work practices
  • Adhere to Maine Beer Company’s packaging SOPs to complete daily packaging responsibilities
  • Adhere to appropriate SOPs to ensure minimal oxygen pick-up during packaging operations (e.g. capping on foam, monitoring DO during kegging, etc.)
  • CIP of tanks, hoses, etc.
  • Assist other production personnel (brewers and cellar operators) as needed
  • Drive truck to deliver trailer with spent grain to local farms
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks of packaging equipment as needed
  • Perform routine cleaning tasks of packaging equipment and work areas as needed

    Qualifications:

  • Production brewery experience, particularly in the packaging discipline highly preferred, but willing to train the right candidate
  • Ability to multi-task while working safely and efficiently
  • Ability to follow established SOPs
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs repeatedly and work standing on concrete floors for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to work with little to no supervision
  • Has excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills
  • A positive attitude and willingness to help co-workers when needed
  • An individual that takes initiative, is proactive and is self-motivated
  • Is meticulous about sanitization, and has an appreciation for keeping things clean
  • Has great attention to detail
  • Schedule flexibility is a plus (e.g. able to work late when needed, able to accommodate changing/rotating schedules)
  • Mechanical aptitude is a plus
  • Electric pallet jack / fork lift experience a plus but willing to train the right individual
