Maintenance & Engineering Manager (Full-Time)

We are looking for a self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic to lead a team of Maintenance Specialists, solve equipment problems, and optimize overall equipment effectiveness, reliability, and safety while providing technical expertise to Maine Beer Company. First and foremost, the candidate must have a positive attitude and work well with others as a member of a small company. The position is full-time and based in Freeport, Maine. Duties and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Lead a team of Maintenance Specialists to maintain and optimize all aspects of an automated production facility.
  • Lead the planning and execution of equipment repairs and ensure the proper functioning of all production-related equipment, be on-call and available for emergency repairs, and be on-call and available for assistance following utility disruptions (e.g. power outage).
  • Act as a project manager (design, obtain quotes, procurement, coordination, and execution) of brewery improvement and expansion projects.
  • Maintain relationships with, schedule, and act as point of contact for trades working on the repair/maintenance/improvement projects of the production-related equipment, and manage maintenance contracts with our vendors.
  • Proactively organize, prioritize, and complete preventative maintenance tasks to increase the reliability of all production equipment.
  • Production equipment includes (but is not limited to): brewhouse, cellar vessels, gas/liquid lines and hoses, pumps, grain handling equipment, steam boiler, glycol chiller, air compressor, bulk CO2 tank, and packaging equipment, etc.
  • Coordinate and schedule downtime with the production team on repairs that may affect their schedule, and lead effective Preventative Maintenance and Predictive Maintenance (PM & PdM) programs.
  • Manage and maintain spare parts inventory; procurement and organization of all parts and tools in the storeroom.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow safe work practices.
  • Oversee the team’s involvement in the development and implementation of the company’s safety and sustainability programs and projects.
  • Create, maintain, and optimize Standard Operating Procedures as needed.
  • Manage and coordinate training efforts to improve the technical ability of the team.

Qualifications:

  • Engineering degree and experience in a related field (industrial environment and/or prior brewery experience preferred).
  • Good leadership skills and prior experience managing a team; strong interpersonal skills and a team-first attitude.
  • Experience with industrial automation software and hardware (e.g. Ignition, Allen Bradley) preferred.
  • Familiar with high-pressure steam systems and pressure vessels, high-pressure steam boiler operator license preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and working knowledge of complex machinery (e.g. 480V 3-ph electrical systems and drives, rotary beverage fillers, separators, valves and instrumentation, compressed air systems, refrigeration systems, etc.).
  • Ability to multi-task while working safely, efficiently, with a sense of urgency, and under pressure in an industrial environment.
  • A high degree of technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills; ability to think on your feet and troubleshoot complex systems on the fly.
  • Has excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards.
  • Has great attention to detail and takes initiative when necessary.

Sensory Manager (Full-Time)

Maine Beer Company is dedicated to producing the best beer possible. We are looking for someone to join our team in the quality department. First and foremost, the candidate must have a positive attitude and work well with others as part of a brewery team. This person would conduct daily sensory panels, training, data analysis, and routine QA/QC under the supervision of the Director of Quality. The position is full-time and based in Freeport. Salary is dependent on experience. Duties and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Perform shelf-life studies and define our current acceptable shelf-life for each brand
  • Evaluate flavor and aroma changes on any one of our beer brands with regards to raw materials substitutions, brew house process changes, new equipment implementation, packaging issues, and shipping issues
  • Educate new employees on the intricacies of beer flavor and aromas as part of their entry training
  • Put new tools and methods into practice to track and analyze the data being gathered
  • Determine, coordinate and implement sensory panels to be conducted 5 days a week
  • Complete descriptive analysis, brand maintenance, and difference tests
  • Analyze panels and present reports of findings to management
  • Assistwithproductreleasefromqualitystandpoint
  • Maintain warm stored and cold stored beer library for shelf-life analysis
  • Maintain data input and analysis to track brand maintenance and pilot beers
  • Remain current on sensory testing and analytical methods. (ASBC, Siebel class work, MBAA, etc.)
  • Raw material sensory evaluations as needed (malt / hop crop changes)
  • Conduct monthly sensory training for existing panelists
  • Write fingerprint descriptions for all new brands for marketing and panel purposes

Qualifications:

  • Outgoing personality and positive attitude
  • A degree in biology, food science, microbiology or other related field OR a minimum of 2 years of experience in brewery quality control
  • Familiarity with brewing microbiology and brewing process
  • Ability to follow established SOPs and work safely within a laboratory environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and communication
  • Great attention to detail

Line Cook (Full or Part-Time)

  • Stock and prepare stations for service of wood-fired pizza and other food at Maine Beer Company
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness throughout shift
  • Abide by dress code applicable to food safety

  • Cleaning and maintenance of all equipment used for food service at MBC

Dishwasher (Full or Part-Time)

Overall Description: The Dishwasher at Maine Beer Company is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards for plates, silverware, glassware, cooking utensils, etc. using machine and manual cleaning methods. This position also ensures the dishwashing area is cleaned and organized. This position can be full-time or part-time. The dishwasher reports directly to the Head Chef, and the position includes nights and weekend hours. Compensation begins at $20/hr. Packaging Technician (Full-Time)

We are looking for a self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic to join our Packaging Team within the Production Department to conduct daily packaging operations (bottling and kegging beer). First and foremost, the candidate must have a positive attitude and work well with others as a member of a small company. The position is full-time, typically 40+ hours per week, and based in Freeport, Maine. Duties and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Work collaboratively with the Technical Director and the Packaging Manager to ensure that high quality standards are met in all packaging operations
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment and follow safe work practices
  • Adhere to Maine Beer Company’s packaging SOPs to complete daily packaging responsibilities
  • Adhere to appropriate SOPs to ensure minimal oxygen pick-up during packaging operations (e.g. capping on foam, monitoring DO during kegging, etc.)
  • CIP of tanks, hoses, etc.
  • Assist other production personnel (brewers and cellar operators) as needed
  • Drive truck to deliver trailer with spent grain to local farms
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks of packaging equipment as needed
  • Perform routine cleaning tasks of packaging equipment and work areas as needed

Qualifications:

  • Production brewery experience, particularly in the packaging discipline highly preferred, but willing to train the right candidate
  • Ability to multi-task while working safely and efficiently
  • Ability to follow established SOPs
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs repeatedly and work standing on concrete floors for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to work with little to no supervision
  • Has excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills
  • A positive attitude and willingness to help co-workers when needed
  • An individual that takes initiative, is proactive, and is self-motivated
  • Is meticulous about sanitization, and has an appreciation for keeping things clean
  • Has great attention to detail
  • Schedule flexibility is a plus (e.g. able to work late when needed, able to accommodate changing/rotating schedules)
  • Mechanical aptitude is a plus
  • Electric pallet jack / fork lift experience a plus but willing to train the right individual
