Maine Big Night is a community science project with eyes on responsible stewardship of the amphibian ecosystem. After a long winter of hiding beneath leaves, soil, and logs, many amphibians will re-emerge when night temperatures reach approximately 40°F and the ground is soaked in rain. Each year, hundreds of volunteers assemble across the state when the conditions are right, to ensure safe highway crossings for species like Spotted Salamanders and Spring Peepers. mainebignight.org
